STYLE OF PLAY

TIERED STRUCTURE

There will be three tiers at the Capital City Rugby Cup. Tier I and Tier II will have eight teams. Tier III will have six teams. The tournament directors will determine which teams are placed in each tier. The criteria for evaluating will be previous match results at IGR tournaments and local play, number of players, number of sides, etc… The tiers will be structured to uphold safe play of rugby.

The assignment of tiers and pools will be released following the Coach and Captains Meeting May 24 at the Welcome Party at Axis Night Club.

TOURNAMENT DAY ONE | POOL PLAY

Utilizing standard pool play, each team will play three teams in their pool, with breaks and lunch between matches to allow players time to recover. The style of the matches will be two, twenty minute halves with ten minutes in between.

Results of each match will reward points to determine the rank of each pool in order to determine placement in the bracket.

Point System

  • 3 for a win
  • 2 for a draw
  • 1 for a loss by 7 or fewer
  • 1 for scoring at least 3 tries

In the event of a tie for bracket placement: head to head result, then most points scored, then least allowed, then coin flip.

TOURNAMENT DAY TWO | BRACKET PLAY

In order to allow teams the opportunity to advance to higher levels to compete for either the Cup, Bowl, or Shield, the results of pool play will result in the following:

The bottom two teams from Tier I will move to Tier II, while the top two teams from Tier II will move to Tier I. The bottom two teams from Tier II will move to Tier III, while the top two teams from Tier III will move to Tier II.

The result will be eight teams in Tier I competing for the Capital City Cup, eight teams in Tier II competing for the Capital City Bowl, and six teams in Tier III competing for the Capital City Shield.

Winners of the first round in Tier I and Tier II will advance through, while the losing teams will be placed into consolation brackets.

Championship matches will each have two, thirty minute halves. 

Every team is guaranteed five matches, competitors of the Capital City Cup and Bowl will play six matches.
